Lucknow, Jan 17 (Agencies): Attacking the Mayawati-led BSP government, Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal on Monday said cases of sexual assault and rape in Uttar Pradesh showed the law and order had worsened in the state.

Such incidents in a democratic country were a "matter of shame", he told mediapersons here.

Asked to comment on the rape of a backward community girl, allegedly by a BSP MLA, in Banda district, Jaiswal said "such henious incidents are taking place as those having the
responsibility of protecting the people are getting out of control."

These incidents showed the law and order had taken a turn for the worse in Uttar Pradesh, the Minister of State for Coal said.

Asked whether Ministers Jitin Prasad and Pradeep Jain Aditya were denied protocol in UP, Jaiswal said such things did not happen in other states.

"It has come to my knowledge the state government will not provide protocol to Ministers of State for non-official programmes. Such things do not happen in other states."

Prasad was not provided an official vehicle during his visit to the state last Saturday while Aditya travelled in a cycle-rickshaw on Monday.
