“I had discussion with Rajnath Singh regarding this. Sidhu is a known face and one of the most respectable party leaders. We will encash on his popularity in the Lok Sabha elections,” Jaitley said.

Jaitely is pitted against Amarinder Singh of Congress from Amritsar seat.

Sidhu’s disappointment with the party was evident when he gave a miss to his mentor Jaitley’s election campaign in Amritsar and left for Bangladesh for the Twenty20 World Cup.

Sidhu, who won Amritsar Lok Sabha seat thrice in a row, shares an uneasy relation with BJP ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) that has prompted his replacement with Jaitley in the holy city.

The absence of Sidhu from Jaitely’s poll campaign may affect BJP’s electoral prospect in Amritsar comprising around 64 percent Sikh voters. Sidhu is the prominent Sikh face of BJP with interesting oratory skills.
