The Congress has 67 members in the 245-member Rajya Sabha while the BJP has 42 members in the Upper House.

While Azad had contested the Lok Sabha elections from Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir and lost by over 60,000 votes, Jaitley had lost against Congress candidate Amarinder Singh by nearly 90,000 votes from Amritsar.

In the previous session, former prime minister Manmohan Singh was the Leader of the House while Jaitley was the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 282 seats while the Congress suffered a major blow as it managed to get only 44 seats.
