1. Thousands of Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh near Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi.

2. General Reginald Dyer led a team of 50 soldiers into the Bagh armed with rifles. Dyer had also brought two armoured cars fitted with machine guns; however, the vehicles were stationed outside the main gate as they were unable to enter the Bagh through the narrow entrance.

3. Official sources estimated the fatalities at 379, with 1,100 wounded. Although Dr Williams DeeMeddy, the Civil Surgeon indicated that there were 1,526 casualties.

4. The Bagh is a large, open area of size between six and seven acres surrounded by walls roughly 10 feet in height.

5. Apart from the gun shots, many people died in the stampede caused by the sense of panic as it was very difficult to escape through the narrow gates, while many jumped into the well in the compound. A plaque states that 120 bodies were removed from the well.
