"The university received a record 1,49,148 applications for over 6,000 seats in the academic year 2015-16 registering a 25 per cent increase in the applications received last year," Jamia spokesperson Mukesh Ranjan said in a statement today.

While 33,077 applicants are female and 73,865 male, the varsity has also got two applications from transgenders.

The online registration process for admission had commenced on April 13 and was scheduled to end on May 1 but the deadline was later extended to May 4 in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal and parts of India.

"These applications are for over 240 courses such as M Phil, postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, certificate in 9 Faculties, 39 Departments, and several teaching and research centres," Ranjan said.

"The largest numbers of applications - 39,654 - are for BTech courses followed by Diploma Engineering (10,633), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (6,603), BA LLB (Hons) (4,543) and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (1,199). Other regular courses in Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, Natural Sciences have also witnessed an upsurge in applications," he added.

The university has also introduced four new post graduate courses from this year.

"The newly introduced MA programme in Gender Studies has invited 205 applications, MSc in Biophysics (57), Advanced Diploma in Public Health (46), and Diploma in Disaster Management (Self Financed – Evening) (194)," the statement said.

The maximum numbers of applications have come from Uttar Pradesh (36,407), Delhi (34729) and Bihar (15,333) followed by Haryana (5785), Jammu & Kashmir (2,939), Jharkhand (2,306), Rajasthan (1,688), Uttarakhand (1,524) and West Bengal (1398). Applications have been received from places as far as Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.

"Till date 101 applications have been received from other countries. The figure is likely to go up as the last date for foreign applications is May 15," it added.

Entrance tests for 21 programmes will be conducted across 12 cities. The remaining tests will take place in Delhi. Admit cards for all exams will be issued online.

The date of display of selected/waitlisted candidates list after entrance tests and interviews is July 12 and the last date for completion of admission formalities for selected candidates is July 14, 2015.
