Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday launched the ambitious Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana - welfare scheme aimed at reducing the maternal and infant mortality rate in the state.

Launching the scheme the Chief Minister said that after availing free medical facility under the programme, the health of mother and child would improve.

Gehlot said, “The success of the initiative goes to the public of the state. The problems that would be faced in different levels in the programme would be fixed slowly.”

Around 65,000 women die across the nation on a yearly basis due to complications during pregnancy, out of which 5300 are from Rajasthan.

Out of 9 lakh infants who die within a month of their birth, 7 lakh are those who die within a week of their birth.

Gehlot said that the programme would be started on the block level.
