Chennai: Actress-turned politician and Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Minister Jayalaithaa was on Sunday elected leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party.

She was elected by 146 newly elected MLAs of the party at a meeting held at the AIADMK headquarters here this morning, party sources said.

Jayalalithaa, who led her party to a landslide victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, is slated to meet Governor S S Barnala shortly to formally stake her claim to form government.

Sonia Gandhi on Sunday reached out to AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa and congratulated her on the Tamil Nadu election victory. Sonia Gandhi has also extended an invited to the soon-to-be new chief minister for tea in New Delhi.

This could be a new strategy by the Congress to distance itself from the 2G tainted ally DMK.

It is a significant move though, as not all winning leaders have been invited in this manner. The AIADMK chief also accepted the invitation and will meet the UPA President next month.

Jayalalithaa also met the governor SS Barnala on Sunday to stake the claim to form the new government in Tamil Nadu.

She is likely to take oath on May 16.
