MDMK chief Vaiko had also written to the PM over Kumar’s release on Wednesday. Vaiko in his letter to Modi reportedly contended that 47-year-old Alexis Prem Kumar dedicated himself for uplift of Tribals throughout his life and also served for the Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu.

Kumar was kidnapped on June 2 by unidentified gunmen from an unknown militant group in the Herat region of Afghanistan.

Kumar’s family on Tuesday urged the Indian government to take concrete steps to ensure the safe release of the Indian national.

A native of Tamil Nadu, Kumar was working with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), an educational charity, as its Afghanistan Director. He has been in the country for over three years.

Before moving to Afghanistan, Kumar had worked for the JRS, serving Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu.

Kumar had accompanied teachers on a visit to a JRS-supported school for the returnee refugees in Sohadat village, 25 km from the city of Herat. Kumar was kidnapped from the school when he was about to return to Herat, the JRS said.
