Ranchi: To express their protest against the government to press for their long pending demands, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) workers of the Jharkhand have decided to demonstrate outside the state assembly on March 13. The MNREGA workers have been pressing for an increment in their monthly salaries and allowances from the month of February. The demonstration will be staged under the banner of Jharkhand State MNREGA Workers Union. It is believed that the demonstration will be attended by a large number of workers.

Basant Singh, state President of the MNREGA Workers’ Union, informed that the workers had been holding strike since February 21 to press the government to accept their demands. He further added that after a series of meetings between the MNREGA workers and the state government officials since then, the two sides failed to reach a settlement in this regard. He added, “Until our demands are fulfilled, none of the workers will resume work. Jharkhand government has been giving Rs 3500 as monthly salary and Rs 850 as allowance to the workers.”
