Meanwhile, a mob torched five empty trucks and ransacked a health centre after they did not find any doctor there when they went with the injured, the police said.
They also put up road blockade on the Hatgamariah-Noamundi road demanding adequate compensation to the families of the deceased and arrest of the culprit.
The passengers were going by the pick-up van to Hatgamaria from Jagannathpur in the district when the mishap occurred around 9.30 AM, Sub-Divisional Officer of Jagannathpur, Jaikishore Prasad said.
Five persons were killed on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries in course of treatment.

While the critically injured three passengers were referred to Jamshedpur, about 100 kms from the spot, the rest were rushed to Noamundi in West Singhbhum district and Champua in adjoining Odisha, Prasad said.
