New Delhi: Expressing concern over the seizure of over Rs 2 crore allegedly from the car of the younger brother of an independent Rajya Sabha candidate in Jharkhand on the poll day, the members of the Upper House on Friday demanded the Election Commission’s intervention for initiating probe into the serious issue.

Raising the issue during the Zero hour, Tapan Kumar (CPI-M) said, “The misuse of money and power in the Rajya Sabha polls is a big setback for democratic fabric of the Parliament. This is a serious issue which must be addressed urgently. The chairperson of the Rajya Sabha must direct the election body to initiate the probe into the issue.”

Echoing similar views, Birendra Prasad Baishya (Asom Gana Parishad) said, “The person who is elected to the Upper House through this unfair means will indeed be a big threat to democracy. This is a serious issue and a big worry for all of us.”

The parliamentarians asked Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan to convey the sentiments of the House to the Home Minister.
Khan, however, said that the House cannot direct the election commission over the issue underling that the EC is an autonomous body.

It is worth mentioning that the Parliament witnessed pandemonium over the nomination of Anshuman Mishra as an independent candidate for the Upper House poll. He, however, withdrawn his nomination after stern opposition of the BJP.
