Jammu (Agencies): Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra has cleared the appointment of G R Sofi as the first Chief Information Commissioner of the state.

The Governor has given approval to the appointment of Sofi as CIC after the state government re-submitted the file with clearance report from Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Raj Bhawan sources said on Thursday.

Raj Bhawan today sent the file to the state government after issuing formal orders for Sofi's appointment.

On February 5, Vohra had returned the file to the government as it did not carry the mandatory CVC clearance.

Sources said the government admitted its mistake and re-submitted the file after CVC gave its clearance on February 6.

The name of Sofi, 59, was decided after a meeting of the three-member selection panel comprising Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, leader of Opposition Mehbooba Mufti and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand.

Sofi, currently working as Chief Income Commissioner (Amritsar Division), will be in the post till he attains the age of 65 years or any order thereof. The CIC is appointed for a period of five years.

The selection Committee is likely to appoint the two Information Commissioners before the budget session, which will start in Jammu from February 28.
