Jammu: The State Government in Jammu and Kashmir has banned the sale of gutkha and pan masala in plastic sachets from April 1. Now, no one will be allowed to sell tobacco products in plastic pouches in the state. Strict action will be taken against those who will not adhere to it.


Acting on the Supreme Court’s order, the Central government had already banned the sale of these products in plastic sachets.

The ban will come into effect on Friday in the Jammu. The shopkeepers have been given an instruction to dump the stock of tobacco products in plastic pouches by March 31. 

 
According to estimates, there is a sale of 50 lakhs gutkha and pan masala pouches in a day in the state.

The move by the state government will affect the business in tune of crores.  As an alternative, the companies have already launched pan masala and gutkha in paper sachets. The new pouches are available in the market.


The Drug and Fund Control Organisation has already started working to implement the order effectively. “The orders have been issued to shopkeepers not to sell tobacco products in sachets,” said Satish Gupta, controller of Drug and Fund Control Organisation.
