Srinagar: Police detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik and many other members of the separatist group on Friday who were out on a protest march in Srinagar.

The protest began in the leadership of the party chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik at 11:00am from the Maisuma Chowk and slowly headed towards the UN office at Sonawar. The party workers raised slogans in favour of JKLF founder, Maqbool Bhat who was sentenced to death in a murder case and was buried in the premises of Tihar Jail in Delhi. The protestors demanded return of Bhat’s mortal remains for burial in the valley.

When the protestors reached Badhshah Chowk, the police in the wake of section 144 stopped the protestors from proceeding. Soon clashes broke out between the police force and the protestors who began pelting stones at the cops.

Seeing the situation going out of control, the police resorted to Lathi-charge and fired tear shells to disperse the protestors. Nine people along with four policemen were injured in the clash.

However, Yasin Malik along with some supporters were arrested by the police on the spot.

The JKLF had also called for a shutdown across the Kashmir Valley on February 11, to commemorate the death anniversary of founder of the party Maqbool Bhat.
