Srinagar: In a shocking incident, Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday registered a case against unidentified defence personnel for allegedly entering three hotels in Leh earlier this week and harassing tourists staying there.

As per the complaint, the incident took place on May 30 and 31 when patrolling party of the third division of Army based at Kharu in Leh area barged into Hotel Masarovar, Holiday Inn and Keddar Guest House.

According to sources, the soldiers carrying weapons, vandalized the hotel property, questioned the tourists on the name of investigation and got into a brawl with the hotel staff. The soldiers also tried to enter into a scuffle with the local police when they tried to intervene into the matter, sources said.

“When some tourists objected over the chaos, the Army personnel accused them of using satellite phones inside the hotels,” the sources added.

Several foreign tourists staying in these hotels felt harassed in the process and threatened to lodge a complaint with the Government through their embassies.

However, defence spokesman Colonel J S Brar denied claims of Army harassment and said that the Army has stepped up vigil in Leh region following intelligence inputs of terrorist infiltration in the region.
