Srinagar: In an encounter with the Army personnel on Thursday, two Lashkar–e-Taiba militants were killed in the forests of Handwara, North Kashmir. A search operation for the remaining absconding terrorists is still on.

According to the sources, the gunfight started after police, assisted by Army, launched a combing operation in the forest after getting specific information about presence of nearly five militants hiding in the area.

SOG Handwara assisted by 21 RR personnel commenced the search operations.

Two hiding militants were confronted by the search parties in night and were asked to surrender but the militants opened fire and tried to escape after which they were killed.

“Two militants were killed and later identified as 'Divisional Commander' Abu Jabran of LeT and his close associate, both Pakistani nationals,” said Chaudhary Mohammed Aslam, SP, Kupwara.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the slain militants, sources added.
