Shillong: Journalist and national award winner Semeri Alva B Sangma was conferred the Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) by the North Eastern Hill University for her research in ‘Rites of passage in the Oral Garo literature’.

Alva, a reputed journalist and an adventurist, worked under the supervision of Dr Sujata Gurudev for her thesis to document the rites and rituals of the Garo tribes.

Born to G R Marak and P B Sangma, Alva is also an editor, publisher and the proprietor of A.chik Songbad, a Garo newspaper besides being a stringer for NDTV 24×7 (Garo Hills districts).

A multi-faceted personality, Alva was awarded the national award for her “outstanding efforts” in entrepreneurship in 2010 by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, union government.

She had also bagged the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship in 2006 and was the only lady driver in India to have featured in Apollo Flight of the Hawks, an Extreme Adventure Reality Series of the National Geographic Channel in 2010.
