Dharamsala, Jan 28 (Jagran News Netrwork): A day after Himachal police seized huge amount of foreign and Indian currency at a transit home of the 17th Karmapa Lama, sources in the investigating agencies suggested on Friday that the Lama’s Chinese links had come under scanner.

Ugyen Trinley Dorje aka Karmapa Lama’s Gyuto Monastery at Sidhbari near Dharamsala was raided on Friday. Currency notes of various countries amounting to Rs 1.5 cr were recovered.

Karmapa was reportedly inside the monastery when the raids were conducted.

There is concern in the Union Home Ministry that the funds may have been channeled through hawala route and may have been collected to build China-friendly Tibetan institutions, news channels reported.

The Karmapa may be questioned in this regard, sources added.

An aide of Karmapa, Shakti Lama, said to be his accountant, was arrested and interrogated about the source of the money stacked in the monastery. Rs 8.5 cr was recovered for him.

The amount was to be used to buy a 5 acre plot in Kangra in the state, the reports suggested. This was the Lama’s third attempt to buy the land.

Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate joint team is now probing the matter.
