Malappuram (Kerala), Jan 08 (Agencies): The ashes of veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister K Karunakaran, who passed away last month, were immersed in the Bharathapuzha River at Thirunavaya in the district on Saturday morning.

Karunakaran's son K Muraleedharan, a former KPCC president, immersed the ashes at 7 am along with his sister Padmaja Venugopal and other family members.

The urns containing the ashes were brought in a procession from Karunakaran's house at Thrissur, accompanied by relatives and scores of Congressmen.

Karunakaran, 93, a four-time Chief Minister of Kerala, had died on December 23 after a prolonged illness.
