Muzaffarnagar: The UP government’s ambitious project to promote girl child education in the state by opening Kasturba Gandhi Awasiya Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) seems to have lost its sheen.

Apparently, 18 such schools spread in different divisions of the state have failed to attract even the expected number of students.

According to a recent report released by the state government under its education for all  campaign, which is also monitoring Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in UP, 51 KGBV have been set up in Western UP while 241 KGBVs in Purvanchal.

Some of the KGBVs are being run under UP Education Department whereas a few others are being run under Mahila Samakhya Programme.

At present, a total number of 746 such residential schools are being run in Uttar Pradesh.

In such a scenario, the government seems helpless to manage the increasing expenses on education.
