Los Angeles: The Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet made her first appearance on small screen as a divorcee mother who struggles to earn bread and butter for her family has amazed the critics.

The 35-year-old actress, who plays the title role in the new HBO mini-series 'Mildred Pierce,' has overwhelmed her critics with her brilliant performance.

A remake of the 1941 James M Cain film starring Joan Crawford, Winslet plays Pierce, a mother raising her two daughters against the backdrop of 1930s Depression.

Critics who attended the screening in Los Angeles praised her performance by calling her "an amazing actress, capable of showing every nuance of feeling".

The series also stars actress Evan Rachel Wood who plays the role of Winslet's teenage daughter Veda.
