Bodh Gaya: Press Council of India Chairman Justice (Retd) Markandeya Katju during his visit to Gaya on Saturday reiterated his statement that the press did not enjoy freedom in the state and was harassed if they wrote against the government.

After slamming Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan over attacks on journalists in the state, Katju had on Friday targeted the Bihar government alleging the media in the state that if any journalist writes against the (Bihar) Government or against any minister or official, that journalist is either dismissed from his job or is transferred.

He claimed that the newspaper proprietors are pressurized to act against such journalists or else their government advertisements are stopped. Katju said that therefore the journalists in the state avoid writing against the (Bihar) government.
