Kejriwal said the fact that the BJP’s entire top brass has reached Varanasi shows the nervousness and fear of defeat in the party ranks. He also questioned whether such a move could save Modi from defeat in the holy city.

The former Delhi chief minister also gave Modi an opportunity to choose a place of his choice in Varanasi for an open discussion.

“I invite Mr Modi for an open discussion on a public platform. Let Kashi people ask straight questions from both of us. Time place his choice,” Kejriwal tweeted on Thursday morning.

“Modi ji given permission of Ganga arti. Yet rather than performing arti, he is trying to draw political mileage. Sad,” he added.

“BJP top brass landed in Kashi. Shows their nervousness. Will they be able to save Modi ji from defeat?” he further said.

Kejriwal accused Modi and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley for spreading lies over the Election Commission’s denial of permission to perform Aarti at the bank of River Ganga. He also put on display a copy of letter on his Twitter account by the poll body in which it had allowed the Gujarat Chief Minister to perform Ganga Poojan in Varanasi.

“Did Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley lie about EC ? Permission was given for Ganga Aarti in letter below,” Kejriwal said alongside a picture of the letter by the election watchdog in which they had allowed permission to Modi for performing aarti at River Ganga.

“Here is EC's Permission to Modi ji for Ganga Arti. Then why doesn't he just go and perform arti? Why politicise it?”  he asked.

“Agar apko kewal arti aur pujan karna ho to EC ki permission nahi chahiye hoti. U need EC permission for political activities. I went alone one day and performed arti. No one stopped me. I will again go with my wife today and do arti. Neeyat saaf honi chahiye,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Modi pulled up the Election Commission and said that the poll body was not concerned about institution’s neutrality.
