Jind: Following the Supreme Court’s tough stand on honour killings and other caste related crimes, the Khap panchayats (caste panchayats) have decided to fight a legal battle against it.

Around 40 Khap representatives, under the leadership of Kuldeep Singh Dhanda met on Sunday and decided to raise their voice against the proposed Honour Killing Bill by rallying MPs and MLAs belonging to their representatives.

It was also decided that the community would stage protests and fast-unto-death in the national capital if their demands were not met.

The Apex Court on Tuesday declared Khap panchayats as unconstitutional and directed state governments to take strict action against those who take law in their hands.

Ordering strictest of action against such crimes, it also ruled that DM, SSP and SP will be held responsible for any such crime under their jurisdiction.

Differing from Apex Court’s verdict, Khap representatives opined that Khaps should come forward for the welfare of the community.

Jat reservation also came up for discussion in the meeting. Jat Reservation Maha sabha formed a committee and decided to submit its demand to the newly constituted commission on the issue.
