On 30 January 2008, Ryder was chosen in the 12-man Twenty20 squad and the 13-man ODI squad to play against England, but former cricketer Adam Parore hit out at the NZ selector to pick Ryder, claiming that he is "too fat" and "in no fit state to play for team."

1. His 2007/08 season ended on 24 February 2008 when he badly cut his hand trying to break into a toilet at bar, the day after NZ had won the ODI series against England.

2. On 7 January 2009, Ryder indulged in a "late night drinking session" after the 3rd ODI against the West Indies and he was dropped for the 4th ODI.

3. On 8 March 2012, Ryder decided to take an indefinite break from international cricket following injury concerns and a prolonged history of disciplinary issues.

4. In December 2012 he scored 162 from 174 balls against Central Districts, but Ryder was still not ready to return to international cricket.

5. In 2013, he was put into a medically-induced coma following an assault on him outside a bar in Christchurch that left him with a collapsed lung and a fractured skull.
