New Delhi: The killing of DSP Zia-ul-Haq in Pratapgarh has triggered political storm leading to the resignation of Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya from Uttar Pradesh government.

A series of unfortunate incidents unfolded at Pratapgarh that led to the cop’s death and later resulting into the resignation of UP’s controversial minister.

Here’s a look at the sequence of incidents that led to political crisis in Uttar Pradesh.

# Village head of Ballipur village, Nanhe Lal Yadav (38) was allegedly gunned down on Saturday evening over a property dispute. Nanhe, who had recently won the gram panchayat elections was shot dead by unidentified men in the village (on the outskirts of Kunda town), about 160 kms from Lucknow.

# Enraged over the murder, agitated mob torch a house in the village and thrash some women.

# As the situation got out of control, DSP Zia-ul-Haq (32) rushed to the spot on getting information.

# Posted as Circle Officer at Pratapgarh’s Kunda, Haq reached the crime scene to investigate the violence, but he was attacked by the angry mob.

# During the clash between the police force and the mob, Haq was beaten badly and reportedly hit on the head. He was then shot on the leg and chest.

# The DSP was reportedly dragged through the village by four men, who are allegedly associates of Raja Bhaiya. The officer succumbed to injuries on Saturday night.

# During the clash, village head’s brother Suresh also received serious injuries and he too died later on Saturday. A sub-inspector also received grievous injuries. 

# Parvin Azad, the widow of slain officer on Sunday accused controversial minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya and his aides for killing her husband.

# Haq’s wife filed a complaint in Kunda police station on Sunday evening, where her husband was posted. In a complaint, she alleged that her husband was killed on the behest of Raja Bhaiya.

# Parvin also named Pratapgarh district panchayat chairman Gulshan Yadav, Raja Bhaiya's driver Guddu Singh, and two others, Rohit Singh and Hari Om, as accused in her complaint. She said that her slain husband was probing into a complaint involving the accused.

# A case of murder and criminal conspiracy was registered against the Raja Bhaiya and four of his associates on late Sunday evening.

# Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 20 lakh to the family members of the slain DSP.  The Uttar Pradesh government warned of action against those involved in the killings.

# The Akhilesh government came under attack from the opposition parties on Sunday over the ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation in the state. BSP supremo Mayawati demanded the removal of Raja Bhaiya.  

# UP's food and civil supplies minister Raja Bhaiya resigned from the UP cabinet on Monday, a day after he was booked for allegedly conspiring to kill Haq.  Raja Bhaiya, who has a lengthy criminal record met chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and tendered his resignation.

# Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav confirmed that Akhilesh accepted Raja Bhaiya's resignation and forwarded it to Governor BL Joshi, who approved it immediately.

# Tension ran high in Balipur village with villagers now demanding immediate action from the state’s Chief Minister in connection with the killing.
