Here, we highlight some grey areas in its attempt to join big five at the global body.  

1. Apart from support of permanent members like China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States, the amendment needs the support of two-third majority of the 193 member nations.

2. The differences among permanent members over amendment is a major block for India.

3. India’s economic contribution to security council budget is very minimal, which mellows down its claim for permanent membership.

4. No amendment negotiations took place in UN General Assembly for last 23 years.

5. During the last two decades, Russia remained ambivalent.

6. China being India’s rival harps on the need for consensus. It remains the biggest roadblock.

7. India's stand on middle east and gulf countries is soft and it maintains neutrality. This is interpreted as India’s inability to face global issues.
