New Delhi: In yet another embarrassment for the government, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna got confused about a Pakistani inmate lodged in Ajmer jail and gave the answer to a question by thinking him as an Indian inmate in Pakistan jail.

In a reply to a question asked by JD-U leader Shivanand Tiwari regarding a Pakistani inmate, Dr Shayad Mohammad Khalil Chisti, lodged in Ajmer jail, Krishna said the Government of Pakistan must consider his release on humanitarian ground.

Krishna, who stood to respond to the question, said, “Chisti is lodged in Pakistan jail and it was a matter to be considered by the government of Pakistan on humanitarian ground. We have raised the issue with the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan in the recently concluded Foreign Secretaries talks.”

To the hilarious answer, CPI(M)'s Brinda Karat said that the Minister had misunderstood the question and that he was talking about somebody else, following which the BJP members also started the uproar.

The Prime Minister, who was also present in the House, finally came for the rescue of Krishna and clarified the matter. He said, “Chisti is lodged in Rajasthan jail not Pakistan jail. I have been apprised of the issue and have spoken to the Home Ministry. The Home Ministry would discuss the matter with the Rajasthan state government.”
