Imphal: People belonging to Meitei tribe were fleeing villages from Manipur's Senapati district after a Kuki militant outfit served a 'quit notice' on them. This militant outfit had signed agreement with the government for entering peace talks last year, official sources said on Thursday.

Hundreds of people belonging to the majority Meitei community have been asked to leave their homes within 48 hours by Kuki National Front-Presidium (KNF-P) on Wednesday. These villages are dominated by Kuki tribes.

The sources said KNF-P cadres lodged at government-run camps had served the 'quit notice' to Meitei people following the alleged kidnap of a Kuki person by a Meitei militant outfit.

Efforts were on to restore normalcy in the interior villages, the sources said.

After leaving their homes, many of the Meitei people have come to Sekmai in west district of Imphal and were being given shelter at a community hall, the sources said.
