Lucknow: In the backdrop of stampede at Allahabad railway station on 'Mauni Amavasya' last Sunday, the UP government has stepped up security for the next big 'snan' on 'Basant Panchami' scheduled for February 15, besides taking steps for better coordination with the Railways.

The government has posted IG Bhavesh Kumar and DIG Naveen Kumar and 30 deputy SPs in the Kumbh Mela for additional security during the Basant Panchami snan, IG, Law and Order B P Singh said.

Over a crore pilgrims are expected to take a holy dip on the auspicious day and for the security arrangements eight additional companies of the PAC have been deployed, he said.

The IG said Principal Secretary Home R M Srivastava and DGP, A C Sharma held a video conference with the officials of Kumbh Mela, Allahabad district administration and Railway officials on Tuesday, where a detailed security plan was discussed with emphasis on better coordination with the Railways.

He said the Railways has agreed to provide more trains and additional coaches to clear the rush besides planning effective crowd management steps.

One DSP and two magistrates each will be deployed at all smaller railway stations in Allahabad and its surroundings, he said adding, since the pilgrims coming for a holy dip in Allahabad also go to other religious places nearby like Vindhyachal, Varanasi and Faizabad, additional companies of the PAC are being sent to these towns.

In view of the MeT department's forecast of heavy downpour likely on Basant Panchami, he said the bathing ghats, which are likely to become slippery due to the rainfall, will be barricaded.
