New Delhi: Security was beefed up around the US Embassy and its nearby areas following the killing of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden by US forces in Pakistan on Monday.

"Additional police personnel have been deployed and patrolling has been intensified around the US Embassy after the incident," a senior police official said.

Security has also been stepped up in nearby areas in the diplomatic enclave of Chanakya Puri in south Delhi, he said.

Almost 10 years after the 9/11 terror strike, Al-Qaeda mastermind and the world's most dreaded terrorist bin Laden was killed by US forces on Monday morning after being hounded in a special operation in Abbottabad in Pakistan.

The United States has issued a worldwide travel alert for its citizens, especially those living in Pakistan, soon after President Barack Obama announced that bin Laden has been killed.

Army, police put on alert in Kashmir

Meanwhile, Police and the Army have been alerted across Jammu and Kashmir against any possible reaction to the killing of 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

There is a 'need to keep an eye on the situation', an official source said while referring to the impact that news of Laden's killing by US led forces in Pakistan would have in Kashmir, which has been a hotbed of militancy since 1989.

“Much will depend on what happens in Pakistan,” a senior police official said and added “we will have to watch the situation and reaction in Pakistan”.

There has been no immediate reaction from any major political leader so far.
