New Delhi: As the debate over next President of India gains momentum, RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has proposed Vice President Hamid Ansari’s name over former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

“Vice President Hamid Ansari should be made the President. He should be upgraded as the President of India. He is a good candidate for the President's post,” Lalu said.

Lalu's remark came in the wake of speculation that SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is working with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee to forward former President Kalam’s name as the Presidential candidate.

“Kalam has already been the President of India. Now, Ansari should take the coveted position as he is an able person and his performance in the Rajya Sabha has been commendable,” he said.

The President's post falls vacant on July 24 when Pratibha Patil's term ends.
