New Delhi: Newly inducted Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has already prepared his list of work in which Land Acquisition Bill holds top priority.

Jairam has decided to hold public debate on the draft of Land Acquisition Bill and the amended bill will be made public next week.

According to Jairam, along with giving compensation to farmers in exchange of their land, it is also important to check the use of the land acquired.

“It is important to see whether the land is acquired for infrastructure or for golf courses and the purpose will be discussed,” said Jairam.

After assuming charge as Rural Development Minister, he held discussions with officials on Tuesday evening.

While speaking with reporters, he said, “The amended Land Acquisition Bill will be tabled in the monsoon session anyhow and the Ministry will upload the draft on its website next week.”

Jairam also cleared that he will adopt the same style of working as he did during his stint in Environment and Forests Ministry.

“Along with compensation, it is also important to take note of the farmers whose livelihood depends on the land being acquired. This is the most important matter," he said.
