Gopeshwar (Chamoli Garhwal): The Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway near Birhi has been blocked for traffic causing great inconvenience to pilgrims bound for Badrinath.

The national highway is blocked since Friday night after debris fell on the road following a landslide resulting in long queues of vehicles on both sides. Sources revealed that heavy rains triggered the landslide.

More than twelve thousand pilgrims were stranded on the highway for 14 long hours until the traffic wasrestored at 4 am on Saturday morning by the BRO personnel.

It has been reported that in the wee hours of Saturday, the pilgrims who were coming back from Badrinath shrine as well as those who were heading for the shrine from Joshimath got stuck on the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway till the BRO personnel came for their rescue.

The highway was opened and smooth running of vehicles resumed after 4 pm on Saturday evening.
District Magistrate of Chamoli, PS Gusain said, “BRO personnel have been given strict orders to remove debris at the earliest from the road in any case of future landslides.” He added that information of road blockade has been sent to the Commissioner of Garhwal.
