Colombo, (Agency): Journalists and activists took to the streets to protest against the assault on the freedom of the press following an attack on the offices of a popular Sri Lankan news website.

Journalists, activists and opposition political parties asked the government to apprehend those responsible for torching the offices of the prominent independent website in the wee hours on Monday. Lankaenews is a popular website managed by a journalist in exile due to alleged threats to his life.

Demonstrators chanted slogans against the government for not preventing attacks on media outlets. They carried placards with slogans, "Lanka E-News, the latest victim of media suppression" and "Condemn arson attack".

The agitated protesters demanded the government apprehend those responsible for the attack, highlighting that many incidents in the past were not properly investigated.
President Mahinda Rajapksha directed his police chief to conduct a full scale inquiry.

The police said they have arrested a person suspected for the arson attack on the offices of the website. "We have arrested a person suspected to have a connection with the incident," police said.
