Thiruvananthapuram: CPI-M-led Opposition LDF in Kerala on Friday refrained from calling off its ongoing stir in the state demanding a new dam in place of the 116-year old Mullaperiyar reservoir, over which Kerala is locked in a dispute with Tamil Nadu.

A resolution passed at the LDF state committee meeting here said LDF would take a stand considering the spirit of the agitation, which it termed as 'rights of people to live'.

The LDF is committed to protect people's unity of the on-going agitation, a LDF release said here, adding its Idukki District Committee would decide the future course of action.

Meanwhile the Kerala Pradesh Committee's decision to call off its stir on the issue on Dec 14 drew flak from different quarters, including 'Save Mullaperiyar Samara Samithi', which is spearheading the relay-fast at Chappath in Idukki District, where the dam is located.

The Samithi, in a resolution, said the Centre can effectively intervene to resolve the issue. It said the LDF position should be that the dam should be constructed based on the policy of providing water to Tamil Nadu and safety to people of Kerala.
