The temperature was five notches below the normal average. But the Met office forecast a clear day ahead.

"There was dense fog in the morning and the visibility was less than 50 metres at 8.30 a.m.," said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

In most open areas, the situation did not change even two hours later. According to the Northern Railway, 63 trains coming into the city were delayed while six trains departing from Delhi were rescheduled. Four trains were cancelled.

Road traffic was also hit. Most motorists drove slowly, with their headlights on. The day's maximum temperature is likely to hover around 19 degrees Celsius. Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 97 percent.

"It was literally impossible to drive my bike in the fog. I was unable to see beyond 10 metres. It's a bone-chilling day," said Ram Kishore, a commuter after crossing the DND flyway that links Delhi and Noida.

Saturday's maximum temperature settled a level below the season's average at 19.2 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average.

Leh frozen at -17, cold wave sweeps Kashmir Valley

Leh town in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday recorded its coldest overnight temperature at minus 17 degrees Celsius as the Kashmir Valley remained in the grip of an intense cold wave.

"This is the lowest recorded (in Leh) so far this season," a Met department official said.

The situation was no different elsewhere in the valley. Srinagar, the winter capital, recorded -4.7 degrees Celsius. Jammu, the summer capital, recorded 3.8 degrees. Kargil town was the second coldest place in the state with -15.2 degrees Celsius followed by Pahalgam (-7.6). Gulmarg recorded -3.7 degrees.

Most water taps and water bodies in and around Srinagar were frozen in the morning. People could be seen burning small fires around water taps to de-freeze them. Highly slippery road conditions prevented motorists from taking to the roads in the morning.

The weather office said dry, cold conditions would continue the next 24 hours bringing down the night temperatures further.
