Jharia: Gone are the days of contempt, inferiority and neglect with which residents of Kushta Colony in Dhanbad district have been treated yet, but their one step has changed the perception of people here.

Once pushed off from a pond in the village, the leprosy affected are getting human treatment from those, who once sneered at them. But this did not happen in one day.

The residents of Kushta Colony said, “We were treated worse than animals if we happened to reach the people’s pool by mistake. Therefore, we decided to dig out our pond to pun an end to our misery.”

According to them, fed up with continuous discrimination and scorn we decided to go ahead with this Herculean task. Everyone from the colony extended help and their dream came to reality. They are now enjoying their fruit of labour.

Besides, the pond is also serving even to their economic interest as they have started fish-farming. They have deposited Rs 19,000 in a bank from the first sale.

Head of the colony Leelu Mehto said that a committee for welfare of the colony has been formed.

Doctor Manoj from Life Organization, which work for leprosy patients, said, “the people here have set an example which each section of our society should learn.”
