In her condolence message, Mahajan recalled how Gowarikar helped shape India's satellite research programme.
"While his contribution to India's onward march as a scientific and technological power has been phenomenal, he was also instrumental in institution building, particularly in the field of science and technology," she said.
The Speaker said Gowarikar always encouraged youngsters to tap the potential of pure sciences and research.
A Padmashree recipient, Gowarikar died in Pune on Friday morning. He was 81.
Gowarikar was well-known for his monsoon forecast model. He had worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation and had also been Secretary, Department of Science and Technology as well as Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister.
