Lucknow: The private engineering, computer and pharmacy colleges in the state are likely to be shut down thanks to their unprofitability.

The loss-making colleges including Essar College of Engineering and Gyan Bharti Girl’s Institute of Technology of Meerut; Bhagwant Institute of Technology for Women of Muzaffarnagar, SM College of Pharmacy of Mathura, Charak Institute of Pharmacy of Lucknow and Om Sri Sai College of Pharmacy of Aligarh has applied for No Objection Certificate to shut down these institutions.

Besides this, many other colleges of Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Allahabad, Sitapur, Banda, Jyotiba Phule Nagar and Ghaziabad districts have asked for consent either to shut down their Computer Science, IT, Electrical Engineering, MCA and  Applied Electrical & Instrumentation courses or to minimize the allocated seats.

The low turnout of entrants is the reason that the colleges have decided to close their courses.

There were 1,67,513 seats in the colleges affiliated to University of Engineering, out of which 43.89 per cent or 73,350 seats remained vacant.

To deal with the problem of Y2K in 1999, Vice Chancellor of Gautam Budh University of Engineering has demanded for increasing the seats of Computer Engineers.
