Farrukhabad is one of the high profile assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh as Louis Khursid, the wife of Salman Khursid is contesting from here on Congress ticket. The seat is witnessing four cornered fight.

This time she is pitted against Bahujan Samaj Party nominee Mohd Umar, Samajwadi Party candidate Urmila Rajpoot and Sunil Dutt Dwedi of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In 2007, SP candidate Vijay Singh defeated Sunil Dutt Dwedi of the BJP. Dwivedi is the son of former BJP leader, late Brahmdutt Dwivedi who was a minister in Kalyan Singh government. He is banking on considerable population of Brahmins (15 percent) and Vaishyas (nearly 11 percent) in the constituency to ensure his victory.

Though Louis won Kaimganj seat in 2002, she lost to the BSP’s Kuldeep Gangwar in 2007. Certainly Khursid is under tremendous pressure to ensure his wife Louis’ victory. Moreover, the Congress high command has directed its all 22 MPs in the state to ensure victory of at least two MLAs from their parliamentary constituencies.

Salman Khursid’s recent controversial statement that 4.5 percent reservation would be given to backward Muslims, has drawn wrath of the Election Commission.
It would be interesting to see if Louis can manage to win the Farrukhabad seats or not.
