Madhubani: Two teen aged girls were allegedly beaten up and had their hair cut forcibly by locals on the order of the Gram Panchayat for visiting a fair with a youth and chewing paan at Prabalpur village in Madhubani district, police said on Monday.
The families of the two girls, aged 15 and 17, were reportedly slapped with a fine of Rs 21,000 each for the "misconduct" of their daughters.
The Gram Panchayat also ordered thrashing and fine on the youth, identified as Md Meenu (21), police said. The youth, however, fled.
The family members of one girl deposited the amount, while the same was waived for the other by the Panchayat due to their poor financial condition.
The girls had gone to a fair with Meenu on September 20 and had chewed paan which was noticed by some villagers who convened a meeting of the Gram Panchayat to punish the girls and the youth for breach of social diktat that prevented them from going for outing, police said.
The Gram Panchayat also ordered social ostracism of the families of the two girls and the youth.
Police rushed to the village on getting the information and took the injured girls to a hospital and lodged an FIR against nine persons.
The accused persons are absconding, police said.
Disciplinary action has been initiated against the village chowkidar Jameel Akhtar for not informing the local police about the incident, they said.
