Orchha: Terming the recent poverty figures given by the Planning Commission as a farce, Madhya Pradesh BJP on Sunday announced a 16-day-long protest.

The Commission said last month that poverty in India declined 7.3 percentage points to 29.8 per cent over five years upto 2009-10.

"The protest is to expose the new figures as a farce, as by doing so the plan panel has reduced the number of poor in the country and not the poverty," said state BJP chief Prabhat Jha, at a press conference on the second day of the two-day meeting of state BJP executive here.

"The 16-day long protest will begin from April 14, during which hoardings exposing this farce will be put up, and press conferences will be held by the party leaders upto the tehsil level," Jha said.

The party will also observe May 1, the labour day, as "poor man's day" and will hold a rally, he said.
The party would also collect signatures of over a crore people on a memorandum, to be submitted to the Prime Minister.

Before that, MP BJP leaders would stage a sit-in at Jantar-Mantar, New Delhi and later march to the Prime Minister's office, he said. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj would lead the march.

The BJP leader also informed that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had announced constitution of Orchha Development Authority for the development of this historical city.
