Bhopal: In the procurement of wheat at minimum support price this year, Madhya Pradesh has become the third state in the country after Punjab and Haryana. The state government has so far procured 34 lakh metric tonnes of wheat.

Besides, Madhya Pradesh is the only state, where a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal is being provided to farmers. The state has also taken initiative  in implementing a system in the country whereby money is deposited directly in the farmers' accounts. Till now, Rs 3500 crore has been deposited to the account of famers.

Recently, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in a meeting of Council of Ministers decided not to adjust Rs 50 bonus announced by the Centre to the bonus announced by state i.e. Rs 100 per quintal. The farmers are now receiving a bonus of Rs 150 per quintal besides Rs 1120 per quintal minimum support price.

According to reports, before 2008, the state government used to procure less than five lakh metric tonnes of wheat every year. With the Chief Minister’s initiative, 35 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was procured last year, and this year, it is expected to cross 40 lakh metric tonnes.
