Bhopal: Despite tall claims made by the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan of curbing mining mafias in the state, party MLAs have accepted the fact that mafias are doing illegal mining and are yet to pay the heavy penalty imposed on them by the administration. More so, contractors who have bid for mining leases have not yet paid the amount.

During the Question Hour in the state assembly, three MLAs Vishwas Sarang, Lakhan Ghanghoriya and Lalita Yadav sought reply on the actions taken against mining mafias and collection of fines from the contractors.

Replying to the question, the state Mining Minister Rajendra Shukla informed that the ministry has to charge Rs 1 crore 87 lakhs from 66 contractors who have taken mines on lease in Chhatarpur district. He said mining mafias have been imposed with heavy fines. Nearly Rs 3 lakh fine has to be collected from Narsinghpur, Rs 2 crores from Mandla district and Rs 8 crore 55 lakhs from Balaghat district.

The dismal condition of law and order situation can be gauged from the fact that 16 cases regarding illegal mining are still pending in Jabalpur, four in Katni, 9 in Narsinghpur, 34 in Chindwara and seven in Balaghat.
