The PIL filed by advocate Arun alleged that private schools were denying holidays for even personal needs for students from 10th standard to 12th standard.

He prayed that the court direct the Director of School Education that all government, aided, private matriculation and Anglo-Indian schools to ensure that they worked as per Tamil Nadu Education rules, and prevent them from making any deviation and working over hours and days.

The petitioner said though 'Samacheer Kalvi' (Uniform Education) was brought with the objective of reducing the workload, private schools with a view to getting top ranks were asking the students to study the 10th syllabus from the 9th itself, and Plus two(12th standard) syllabus from 11th standard.

The students did not get any time to relax, and many were driven to commit suicide, he claimed. A Division Bench of Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S Vaidhyanathan reserved orders on the petition.
