Patna: A day after Maharajganj Lok Sabha by-poll result was announced, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday said that it was not a defeat of JD-U as the RJD had won the seat in 2009 and had now just retained it.

"It is not at all a defeat of the JD-U because it was RJD’s seat and it just retained it. What is new in it? It was not a JD-U seat," Kumar said.

He also downplayed reports that the result was also a personal defeat. "After victory, the RJD has a habit of boasting. We never do such a thing after victory," Kumar said.

He also ruled out any impact of the by-poll result on the alliance between the JD-U and the BJP.

On Wednesday, JD-U candidate PK Shahi had said local BJP workers were responsible for his defeat.
