Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane on Friday said that the state was committed to this decision and an official announcement regarding this would be made after June 20.

According to sources, the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) have opposed the decision as they feel that politically powerful Maratha community would trespass reservations for the weaker sections. However, the government has mentioned that Marathas would be brought without touching existing reservation for the backward classes.

The government had constituted a committee headed by Rane to study the socio-economic condition of the Marathas. The committee then recommended 20 percent reservation for the Maratha community that is spread across the state.

According to reports, Rane said there had been talks of reservation for the Marathas for the past several years and so much politics had been played around it.
