According to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi, there are 168 vacant posts in forensic laboratories across the state and efforts are on to appoint staff on contractual basis.

"As of now, there are 168 vacant posts in forensic laboratories in different places. We have begun interviews for the same. We will soon appoint staff on a contractual basis in these labs," Bakshi told PTI.

Bakshi said that 45 mobile units of forensic laboratories have been sanctioned by the Home Department to ensure better collection, analysis and utilisation of scientific evidence.

"The Home Department has sanctioned 45 forensic support units in the state. These include 36 units for districts (one for each district) and one each for the nine police commissionerates," he said.

Citing figures, Bakshi said that crime detection rate in Nagpur region has gone down drastically compared to last year.     There were 22 murder cases reported until March 2014, out of which 20 were detected (91 per cent). During the same period of 2015, detection rate stood at 100 per cent, he said.

There were 80 cases of chain snatching reported until March 2014, out of which 18 were detected (-23 percent). During the same period of 2015, detection rate stood at 19 percent, he said.
