Celebration of Makar Sankranti in different ways:

Makar Sankranti

The festival is marked as 'Makar Sankranti' in most of the Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Goa, Odisha, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Manipur, Sikkim and West Bengal.  On the day sky remains clouded with colorful kites. Also, many savouries are prepared for the day that includes Til ke ladoo, gajak, khichdi, among others.


In Gujarat, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as 'Uttarayan', a kite-flying festival. The sky in Gujarat is filled with many colorful kites in a variety of hues, shapes and sizes. The excitement of the day continues till onset of the night.

Pongal/Uzhavar Thirunal

People in Tamil Nadu celebrate the festival as 'Pongal' or 'Uzhavar Thirunal' and marks it as the end of harvest season. The word 'Pongal' means 'overflowing' in Tamil and is linked with harvest abundance and prosperity. On this day as a ritual, the localities boils fresh milk in hand-made clay pots during the sin-rise. They let the milk boil to come out of the vessel and happily shout 'Pongalo Pongal!' People of Tamil Nadu celebrates this festival by making a special dish called Chakkarai Pongal.

'Maghi' is the Punjabi form of Makar Sankranti which is celebrated in Indian states such as  Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Considered as a winter solstice, Maghi is celebrated a day after Lohri festival. As per tradition, special kheer and khichdi is prepared for the day.

Makara Sankramana

Makar Sankranti is called 'Makara Sankramana' in Karnataka. Sweet delicacies, including sweet pongal, is prepared on the day.

Bhogali Bihu

In Assam, 'Bhogali Bihu' is the propitious harvest festival with feasts lasting for a week. Without dhol, pepa and taal, Bihu is incomplete. On the day, people in Assam prepare traditional delicacies, which are must to taste during Bihu.


January 14 brings 'Sankranthi' festival for the people of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Ladies at home prepares many savouries and relish them throughout the day.
